It is a very simple and light application that comes with a variety of maintenance tools that can be run to make sure that you are enjoying your system at its fullest.
OnyX is a popular[2]freewareutility for macOS developed by French developer Joël Barrière that is compatible with both PowerPC and Intel processors. As a multifunctional tool for maintenance and optimization, it can control many basic Unix programs already built into macOS, including setting hidden preferences otherwise modified by using property list editors and the command line.[3]

Created in 2003 by Joël Barrière, a.k.a. Titanium, the program was originally meant to address its creator's personal needs. Developed using Xcode, Apple's software development environment (Cocoa + AppleScript Studio + Objective-C), OnyX is regularly updated by its author taking into consideration users' suggestions and requests. To do its job, the program uses macOS's standard Unix utilities, allowing their control through a graphical user interface without needing the command line.

OnyX versions are specific to each version of macOS and are not backward compatible. The program will not work correctly if used with an OS for which it was not designed.

OnyX is a simple and powerful optimization tool for keeping you mac in top shape. This version requires Mac OS Mountain Lion, but other versions are available for Mac OS X 10.2 and higher. On running OnyX for the first time, it will run a S.M.A.R.T. verification check on the hard disk which helps in preventing any kind of system failures and will also makes sure that the volumes are clean so that you don’t experience an unusual volume structure. A good help guide aids application use with clear explanations and step by step guides.
With OnyX you can set the number of parameters to be checked by the application which can include Spotlight, iTunes, Expose and even Dock. The fonts, user and even system files are cleaned completely by this application. You will need to close applications to clean them properly though. This helps Onyx work faster and more efficiently.
